Literacy Volunteers of America

Project U.P.W.A.R.D.

LVA/Project U.P.W.A.R.D. is an affiliate of Literacy Volunteers of America. U.P.W.A.R.D. is an adult literacy program serving adults 16 years or older. Its goal is to train volunteers so they are able to tutor other adults who need to upgrade their reading level from the non-reader through level 8.9.

U.P.W.A.R.D. conducts volunteer training workshops in communities in Peoria, Woodford, and Marshall Counties. Workshops follow the cirriculum guidelines of Literacy Volunteers of America. All workshops are free of charge and all materials including the LVA Tutor Manual are furnished.

Adults needing to upgrade their reading skills are matched with volunteer tutors and meet at public locations in their communities. They meet a minimum of one hour a week. All books and materials are furnished by U.P.W.A.R.D. Special needs of students are addressed.

English as a second language volunteer workshops are also conducted at rotating sites. Adults whose first language is not English may also upgrade their reading skills.

LVA/Project U.P.W.A.R.D. is a not for profit organization. Funds are received from the Illinois Secretary of State and some federal funds are received through the Illinois State Board of Education.
